This publication examines Costa Rica’s compliance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, particularly in relation to the right to protection from sexual exploitation. It identifies weaknesses in the enforcement of this right and offers recommendations to both national policymakers and international stakeholders. The study explores the root causes of child sexual exploitation in Costa Rica and highlights gaps in practical implementation of legal and institutional responses. It also discusses relevant U.S. legislation aimed at preventing its citizens from engaging in child sexual exploitation abroad. This publication can be useful to anti-trafficking practitioners in Costa Rica seeking to strengthen child protection systems and ensure national efforts to combat sexual exploitation are effectively aligned with international legal standards.
