This publication examines trafficking in human beings for the purpose of sexual exploitation across Central America. It offers an overview of regional trends and patterns, traffickers’ modus operandi, and the structural causes – including socioeconomic and political conditions – that heighten individuals’ vulnerability. It offers a series of recommendations to address the multifaceted nature of trafficking, calling for a human rights-based approach grounded in international standards. This document can be useful to anti-trafficking practitioners in Costa Rica seeking to better understand common regional challenges and to inform cross-border and collaborative responses.
